Barbara Pallos Research Fellowship at Keck School of Medicine of USC
Benefiting the Research of Dr. Thomas C. Chen at USC Norris
Each year, a medical student is awarded a research fellowship in honor of Barbara. Your donation helps support vital work in brain tumor research. New lab findings are translated into clinical trials with the goal of longer, better lives for patients afflicted with this disease.
During the hours shortly after her passing in November 2010, Barbara made the ultimate contribution — an opportunity for her doctors at USC to harvest and conduct research on her brain afflicted with glioblastoma, a deadly form of cancer.
This rare donation has yielded significant scientific information that ultimately may lead to an alternate, more effective treatment, according to Dr. Thomas Chen, USC neurosurgeon and neuro-oncology expert. Dr. Chen, who led Barbara's treatment team during most of her 2 1/2-year fight against this disease, is encouraged that further studies of her brain tissue will result in additional findings that benefit the research community and future patients.
We remember Barbara every day — wife, mom, sister and friend — for her kindness, quiet and gracious manner, subtle sense of humor, amazing courage, and strong faith in God. We take comfort that her spirit lives on, thanks in part to Dr. Chen's research team.
